This is a truly excellent example of a very rare U. S. New England Militia Musket, which was the result of the U. S. Congress "MILITIA ACT" of May 8th 1792. This act required that each State was required to raise a Militia of every able bodied man aged 18 to 45 to defend its own territory when called upon. It required each man to arm himself with a musket of various specifications, including a bayonet to be available
