Authorized in June of 1877 the regulation Foreign Service Helmet, was made of cork and covered in white cloth with a standard six seams. The style was worn throughout the empire, and this pattern remained in use until replaced by the Wolseley pattern helmet. What we have here is the rare "four panel" version of the helmet, which has 4 panels and seams as opposed to the usual 6. The sun or "pith" helmet originated in
