Constructed of gilded silver, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, the obverse with a leftward facing profile of Ernst I circumscribed by name and title, the reverse with a central inscription of DEM VERDIENSTE UM KUNST UND WISSENSCHAFT (FOR MERIT IN ART AND SCIENCE), unmarked, measuring 29. 73 mm in diameter, maker marked
